An exquisite 'small-cabinet' mineral specimen of attractive gem cubic Fluorite crystals with Galena on matrix from the world famous Diana Maria Mine, Frosterley, Co. Durham, England, UK.
Hailing from 'Pocket 42' of the Sutcliffe Vein, this pleasing specimen featuring perfectly terminated crystals with optical-grade gem clarity. The world-class 'emerald green' crystals take on a stunning blue fluorescence when exposed to natural UV light from the sun. The Fluorites of Weardale are famous across the world from this natural phenomenon, with the word 'fluorescence' originating from this mineral species. Indoors, the crystals lose the blue fluorescence and display their true emerald green colouration. The fluorescence can also be replicated under both SW and LW artificial light as seen in the pictures provided.
Amongst the lustrous gem crystals of Fluorite, several associated Galena are present. As the mines of Weardale were originally working for this lead ore, their presence adds, not just to the aesthetics of the piece, but to the history... an embodiment of this famous, rich mining district of County Durham.
