Mineralogically speaking, Australia dominates this region of the Southern Hemisphere. It also dominates in the production of Opal, with Lightning Ridge and Coober Pedy producing over 90% of the world's precious Opals. other famous minerals of the Oceania Continent include Lead minerals such as Crocoite from the island of Tasmania and Rum Jungle which as produced classic specimens that feature unique association of Malachite and Cerussite. Although technically not minerals, both Fijian and French Polynesian Pearls are highly prized as organic gemstones. New Zealand is known for its distinctive greenstone Pounamu, which is a type of Nephrite jade.
